On Sunday, I got Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. I have the original for GameCube and I liked it, so I figured I would like this one. It’s pretty good so far. It lacks the open nature of the GameCube version, and makes up for it with… well, it doesn’t really make up for it with anything. Technically, it has a lot more to do with a lot more mansions and each one has seven missions. I mean, I’m only two mansions in so a mode might get unlocked later that opens things up. We’ll see what happens. What I want to talk about today is the boss of that second mansion. I just beat that boss, but it was horrible getting to it and not in a “I’m barely defeating these challenges so while it’s horrible now I will feel a sense of accomplishment in the end!” way. Here’s the level:

I didn’t take a picture when I started this level because I didn’t know it was going to be so bad until I was about halfway up. Each set of torches, which extend almost infinitely into the distance, is a different set of three staircases. At each set of torches, you have to choose which staircase to go up. As you can see from the above screenshot, if you choose a wrong staircase, the stairs turn into a ramp and you slide down. Only then do you have some idea of which set of stairs to go up. Here’s the horrible things:

  1. There’s absolutely no indication of which staircase you have to climb on the first attempt. This means that there is a good chance that on each level, you’ll slide back down.
  2. Each time you slide down, you slide down to the absolute bottom of the level and then you have to fight a ghost.

There are at least a dozen sets of staircases. Maybe more, and so I had to climb what felt like a hundred staircases to get to the actual boss fight. The whole thing is an exercise in frustration and whoever thought up this level is a sadist and a monster. Here’s how long it took to complete the level:

The actual boss fight was a piece of cake and took maybe three minutes. That’s eighteen minutes of walking up virtual staircases. It is one of the worst levels I’ve ever seen and I really hope nothing else in this game is worse than this level.
